Heather

Volunteer Victim Advocate

Client Story

Did you know that every two minutes in America, someone is sexually assaulted? Victim Advocate Heather is one of those survivors. Late one night, a rapist slid his way into her Benbrook living room window, pressed his knife to her throat and assaulted her.

“19 years ago, I was met in the hospital by a victim advocate. I remember how vital having her there was for me. Having a victim advocate present was the first key piece to my transformation from victim to survivor,” says Heather.

She is now using her experience to help other victims of sexual assault as an advocate for The Women’s Center of Tarrant County.

“As a survivor who benefited greatly from the volunteer that supported me at the hospital and the services of The Women’s Center, I can’t imagine not turning around to help the next survivor,” said Heather. “I’m not going to sugar coat it – it can be dark and gut-wrenching. We are there for victims at their darkest time. But, I know personally how crucial this work is. It is hard, heavy work, but so incredibly rewarding and needed. It is PRICELESS!”
